Should I give my cats prebiotics or probiotics?

Prebiotics are non-digestible carbohydrates that stimulate the growth and activity of beneficial bacteria in the gut. Studies have shown that adding prebiotics such as Mannanoligosaccharides (MOS) and Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) to cat food has a number of health benefits for cats, including improving gut health and supporting the immune system.

Probiotics are live microorganisms that are similar to the beneficial bacteria that are found in a healthy digestive system. Studies have shown probiotics to have a number of health benefits for cats, including improving gut health and supporting the immune system. However, the challenge with including probiotics in cat food is that they may not survive long enough to reach the gut. What can work is having probiotics in powder form, that are sprinkled onto food just before it is eaten.

As always, if you are thinking about giving your cat additional supplements above and beyond what is already in a complete food developed by vets and feline nutritionists, consult with your vet first.

All Tippaws food contains added prebiotics to aid digestion and gut health. Head to our shop to try it for yourself. New customers get 10% off their first order when they sign up to our newsletter.
